Voices takes a comprehensive approach in order to ensure that every student is successful and meets or supersedes state standards. The following educational components, unique to Voices, assure that we fulfilll our mission:
Dual Language Education (DI): In determining what type of educational program best serves both our English Language Learners and our native-English speakers, we chose to offer an 80:20 Dual Immersion program. The 80:20 refers to 80% of the instruction delivered in Spanish and 20% of the instruction in English. The percentage of English instruction will increase by 10% per year/grade.
Enrichment: Students will have a daily opportunity to participate in enrichment activities based on California content standards. In addition to the following activities, other activities such as developmental play, and fitness clubs may also be scheduled.
More Time Learning: Voices schedule is from 8:00- 4:00 for all students. This will ensure that students learning is extended through acceleration and enrichment opportunities. Click here to view a sample Kindergarten schedule.
Project Based Learning: Teachers develop science and social studies units and projects based on California state standards. Students learn content in depth and have an opportunity to demonstrate understanding through performances of understanding. Additionally, students apply other content knowledge and skills (math and language arts) to make their projects truly integrated. These performances of understanding are then shared with parents and the community through exhibitions.
Mathematical Problem-Solving: The mathematics program at Voices is one of instruction organized around California Mathematics standards. The goals of this program are to have the children apply their ever-increasing mathematical knowledge and skills to novel contexts and increasingly sophisticated mathematical problems. Math instruction is characterized by teaching students to :
- Understand and apply knowledge of numbers;
- Solve problems
- Use skills and apply math to real-world situations.
Digital Portfolios: Every student from kindergarten on will compile a digital portfolio documenting their major learning throughout the year. This portfolio will be used as a reflection tool in student's 8th grade Exit Project.
